One Yard Wonders Sew Along – Week 45 Finished Projects

Welcome to Week 45 of the One Yard Wonders Sew Along!

Week 45 – Project 98
Cozy Dog Bed – designed by Mary Richmond page 270

Cindy chose Carina Gardner Baby Safari Plaid Blue and Moda Bella Solids Caribbean.

Materials Needed:

1 yard of 54″/60″ fabric (medium to heavy weight)

5 1/2 yards of packaged piping with flange (optional)

3 pounds of polyester fiberfill

Sewing-machine zipper foot

Cindy’s Tips and Thoughts

  • Cindy found the construction of the dog bed trouble free.
  • To make the cover removable for washing, she added a zipper to one end and “stuffed” it with a pillow that could easily be removed.
  • The side panels were pieced rather than using piping.

Week 45  – Project 99
Dog Walking Coat  – designed by Dorothy Grinolds page 272

Carrie selected Sweetwater Authentic – 54 inch Canvas – Words and Robert Kaufman FLANNEL Solid Black.

Materials Needed:

pattern on sheet #1

1/4 yard of 3/4″ Velcro

two buttons (optional)

Carrie’s Tips and Thoughts

  •  The dog coat was a simple and easy to follow project. A great project for a beginner.
  • Carrie lined the coats with flannel for added warmth.
  • The book calls for 3/4″ Velcro, which Carrie highly recommends. She used a narrow Velcro to start with and it was not secure enough for the active dogs. (Before she delivered the coats she added more Velcro – the jackets stayed secure on their walk.)
  • Carrie had fun “girly-ing” up Cruiser’s Coat with hand stitched pink embroidery floss on the collar and belt. Stitching the crochet cherries on the collar added a bit more to the “cuteness”.
  • Kirby’s Coat was set off with black manly buttons on the belt.

With the promise of treats Kirby and Cruiser were happy to model their new Walking Coats.

Kirby and Cruiser show off their new Walking Coats on their morning walk.

These dog projects are really nice – these make great gifts for people who have enough “stuff” and also like to pamper their dogs. Love the individual added touches on their coats!

The dog bed turned out so cute! I’ve got a big cat and I know if I make it out of something soft, he’ll use it!

Those dog coats are PERFECT! I wish my dog would wear one. When I put something on him, he just stands and won’t move until I take it off him. Darn! Can’t decorate the dog!

These projects are great. Our dogs won’t go for coats or embellishments, but my aunt’s pug loves to look sharp and may be the lucky recipient of one of these.

wow that pillow looks easy! I love the idea of piecing instead of piping. I’m in the midst of a piping project now, and it is time consuming!

Both projects came out great! I think I’ll be making both for our pup for Christmas.

The fabrics selected work well for the dogs that received these special gifts.

The directions are confusing me. I sewed the piping on and attached the long front panel to the long side of the top panel but am lost after that. It then says to stitch front panel to bottom panel in the same fashion. But, I have already stitched the top panel to the front panel. Do they mean stitch back panel to to bottom panel in the same fashion? Not sure why this is not getting through to my brain!
