One Yard Wonders Sew Along – Week 7 Finished Projects

Week 7 – Project 16
Tabletop Ironing-Board Cover
– designed by City Chic Country Mouse page 54

Jacqui selected Robert Kaufman Metro Living Dot Black.

Jacqui’s Tips and Thoughts

  • In place of a zigzag stitch all the way around her fabric Jacqui used her serger.
  • Jacqui suggests basting and gathering the edges to eliminate the fullness.
  • A cord lock was used to keep her strings tight.

Jacqui enjoys making clothes.  This little board is a handy tool in her sewing room. The Tabletop ironing-board cover is a fun project, simple to follow instructions and high impact in the charm department!

Week 7 – Project 17
Kitschy Kitchen Apron
– designed by Mother’s Apron Strings  pg 56

Carrie selected Mo Bedell’s Party Dress Diamond Garden Shindig and Mo Bedell’s Party Dress Grandma’s Pearls Blue. She loves navy blue and turquoise. The apron will be a perfect match in her kitchen.

Carrie’s Tips and Thoughts

  • Carrie ordered 3/4 yard of the Diamond Garden Shindig and a 1/2 yard of Grandma’s Pearls Blue.
  • When cutting out the apron fabric she used a little extra fabric so the flowers would be centered on the apron.
  • An all over print would not require fabric beyond 1 yard.
  • She cut the ties at 41″ instead of the 31″ so she could wrap around the tie or have a generous bow.
  • The pattern was easy to follow and went together quickly.

The addition of Vintage buttons is a fun suggested detail. They look darling where the ties join the apron.

wish had a serger – as believe that the method Jacqui used is the best approach for the ironing board cover

I got my book yesterday, and I’m super excited to begin working on these projects! My table top ironing board is from the 80s and still has the 80′s cover on it. The ironing board cover is going to be one of my first projects from the book :]

I love the fabric combination on the apron – very feminine and pretty without any pink! (not that I have anything against pink, but blue is looking very fine here).

I made the apron, turned out great, however it is going to me a gift..that ruffle does nothing to flatter my Big Hips!
Had a fun time doing the ruffle however. I have not used too many in the past.

Great job ladies. I was wondering what that tool was on the ironing board?

    Margie,
The tool in the ironing board photo is a mini iron. The full size iron was just seemed too big for the photo. The mini is just adorable!

What a fun apron pattern. Would encourage people to try using my Bon Vivant fabrics in this! The Paris map would be perfect!

Can’t wait to finalize my own apron patterns!
    Will keep you posted!

    Best,
    Paige

      Hi Paige,
OOh la la! If only we had received Bon Vivant in time for this project. I agree 100%, Bon Vivant would be perfect in the Kitschy Apron. Hmmm, maybe that’s what I should make with my Paris Map I just took home for my stash. Tres chic!

I always appreciate the hints your sewists offer, and the great tips on the ironing board cover are no exception. The gathering reminds me of my mom’s cover, and the cord lock is sheer genius.

I thought the ironing board fabric was a bit too jazzy, but it’s turned out fab – I really like it :) Thanks for the tips on more great projects.
