Week 3 – Project 5
Mailbag Pocket Duo
Designed by Cara Angelotta and Mark Cesarik – Page 32

Kate chose a Japanese Import from her stash. The Mailbag is a simple and easy pattern to follow. A great option for sorting your postal deliveries.
Here’s a fun selection of train fabrics currently in stock. Great for train/robot loving boys!

The book suggests using a ribbon or pretty hook to hang the mailbag. We used a dowel which gives the mailbag more stability.

Kate enjoyed the project so much she made another one just for fun! (Can you tell the Pink Chalk Team loves Soul Blossoms?) Kate recommends using interfacing with lighter weight fabrics.
Week 3 – Project 6
Organized Bed Pocket – Designed by Amanda Anderson – page 34

Cindy chose Amy Butler Soul Blossoms Buttercups in Honeydew. The organizer slips between the mattress and box spring and is held in place by rubberized shelf liner. A great place for your books, magazines, glasses or even an MP3 player.

Cindy’s thoughts:
- Step 5 – Add the Liner – See photo to clarify how to attach the shelf liner to the bed pocket. Lay the seam binding on top of the overlap and stitch 2 rows over binding for strength.
- Be sure to use a new heavy duty needle. Sewing through the thick shelf liner will be much easier.
- For a thick project like this a walking foot would be helpful.

Both of this week’s projects will assist you in getting organized in the new year.
The quilt in the Bed Pocket photo is “The Leafy Rosy Quilt” from Glorious Patchwork by Kaffe Fassett.

What fun, another spot to put lovely fabric in the bedroom. Can’t wait to buy myself a copy of the book and join the fun.
Thanks for the ideas, inspiration and tutorials.
Cheers
Mel
I think those mail bags would be really great tied to the back of chairs at Valentine’s day similar to the last picture but in holiday fabric. My wheels are a-spinning!
I love these projects, they are so lovely and useful. I should make a few of the mail bag as I can think of a few handy uses for that one.
Those Japanese fabrics were such a perfect choice for those little mail bags. SO cute!
Both projects turned out so well!!! I so love that Japanese print. Happy weekend to everyone at Pink Chalk!
Happy Weekend to you Melanie! Kathy
These look great! I really want to make one of the bedside organizers….
I love the idea to hang the magazine/mail bag on a shelf instead of the wall! Looks lovely!
love the mail bag!!
These two are my favorite projects so far!
Great projects! The mail sacks are very cute!
Love them…I need to try this one.
These are a great idea for kids beds! I am sending my grandchildren some. Fun prints with borders with trains and robots.
Wow, your mailbags turned out a lot nicer/neater than mine! My excuse is I just started learning how to sew.
BTW, how do I make my reply icon a picture like Darlene has?
Hi Carmen,
Those images are called Gravatars. Here’s a link to the Gravatar website:
http://en.gravatar.com/
Anytime you comment on a blog using an e-mail address that links to your Gravatar account and that particular blog uses Gravators, you’ll see your custom image displayed.
I know WordPress blogs use Gravatars. I’m guessing there’s others as well. I also personally set up a Google profile so that my image shows up on Blogspot blogs.
Thank you for commenting
Kathy
love both projects! and the fabrics too1
I love the idea of using the dowel! The robots are cute. Too many girls in this family, so I don’t get to use boy prints that often. boo hoo – but not really cuz “girl” prints are fun!
I really love those mailbags! The train prints are fabulous too!
Love the bed pocket! Thanks for the tips!
So, I just have to say that I love your blog! I read every news letter, and wish I had more time to stop by the blog as much as I’d like. Your pictures and projects are fabulous and I aspire to make such beautiful pieces myself someday.
I live in Renton, WA and my goal this year is to make the trek over to your shop…every time I look at your blog, I tell myself…this weekend, I’ll find a babysitter, and MAKE my husband go with me THIS weekend! But…life happens. Sooner or later, I WILL make it over for a visit.
Thanks for having such a wonderful blog and sharing such amazing inspiration and sewing information!

That train and robot fabric is adorable! That mailbag project is really cute, but I don’t have enough wallspace for it in my tiny home.
Love the first mailbags! Super cute, need to get this book, so I can make some
I’ve seen photos of the bed pockets before, but I like this one especially. I have two elderly aunts and I think bed pockets would be excellent for them. Thanks for sharing.
Ok, you guys are knocking these outta the park! I swear, none of these projects really spoke to me when I read my copy of the book, but seeing them in action with all of your pretty fabric choices is really ramping up my enthusiasm. I must make the bedside pockets!
Both of those “pocket” patterns look great. Some people certainly come up with very clever ideas!
Ditto Krista’s comment — I love seeing what you guys are doing with the projects!
Peggy
It’s a surprise every week how much fun working on this project is! Your comments are all so sweet. Did you know you can share your projects on our flicker page? The Pink Chalk Team would love to see your projects.

Awesome projects ladies!
These are such pretty and practical projects. Every one is unique because of the fabrics.
I love your choices of fabrics for these projects and the dowel for hanging looks so cute on the mailbags
I really like the idea of the attaching the mailbag to the wire shelf unit. That’s very handy.
Like the ‘stairs-pocket’!! My children could do with one of those..
The train fabic is darling.
Ooooh, I have a roll of shelf liner and this would be a perfect use for it!
Oh my gosh! I am so excited to see our mailbag project featured on one of my all-time favorite blogs! I’m so glad you enjoyed sewing it and hope you’ll check out our blog (with a bunch of new free tutorials) and Mark’s new fabric collection for free spirit called Calypso Swing.
Thanks for commenting Cara! We LOVE the design as you can tell. I’ve updated the links in both blog posts to go to your blog.
Fantastic job on the bed pocket! That pattern is the reason I bought the book a while back, but I haven’t gotten around to making one. Just the inspiration I needed. I’m LOVING this series!
Wow, that’s smart! Shelf liner? Wouldn’t have thought of it. Now I really must pick up a copy of that book.
The bed pocket project is just awesome – also fantastic fabric choice.
I think the mailbag may be the answer to one of my major organization problems–it is cute enough that I would actually want to use it!
I like this project….will be a big help with organizing reading material. Gotta get that book!
The mailbags are such a clever idea. I might have to add them to my list of projects for the year.
Love these mailbags!!! How creative all you Ladie’s are!! All are BEAUTIFUL!! Can’t fairly pick a favorite!
I NEED this book! LOL Very cool projects!
Happy Sewin’!!!
Lori
love the idea of the bed pocket, and the train fabric would be great in my grand son’s room. He loves trains and I would love to make him new curtains for his room…
love using the shelf liner idea and now that I know you can sew it, might use it on other projects too! great blog! and thanks so much for the newsletter.
Ohh, that mail bag would be great in my children’s rooms. A great place to put their homework or bed time story or collection of lego magazines!
They all look so fun!!!! The ideas are endless, arent they!! Cant wait for Saturday and the Dresses for Africa!!!
I’m loving the mail bag right now, especially when I’m trying to get the house re-organized. This has so many uses, from the bathroom to a guest room or kid’s room or office or by the door… etc… luv it!
You have some great ideas, I would love to try!
I love that wall pocket – I should maybe make one for our bathroom!
Both of these topped my list of “MUST MAKES”. Love the mail pockets…I’ll be making several of these (mail, bathroom literature, kids rooms).
I was SO excited by the bed pockets, I called my husband over to show him (before I bought the book). I exclaimed “THAT is the answer to the problem of the books being on the floor on my side of the bed!” He looked at me, grinned, and said “you DO remember that we are taking the frame out from under the bed, right?” In my excitement, I’d forgotten that we had just added a 4″ foam topper to our pillowtop mattress! It is SO high! I’ll need to figure out another way to use this pocket! LOVE it!
I’m searching through the book to make a few things for my cousins girls. They are each so different. This will be perfect for the one who likes to read!
