Scraps and Memories

A couple of weeks ago, Amy from Happy Things offered up her scrap bags for lottery. I put my name in the hat and won! btw, no need to tell Greg any of this, MY scraps sit untouched in his office. Amy’s creations are always wonderful and her fabrics are BEAUTIFUL so I had to take a shot at them. I certainly didn’t need more scraps and ended up feeling a bit overindulgent in winning them so I told myself I’d put them to use right away. That project is coming along nicely and I’ll share it tomorrow.

It’s interesting to receive someone else’s scraps. I feel like I know Amy a little bit better than I did before. She’s a good mother. There are lots of pink flowers, hearts, poodles, rubber duckies and cats on her fabrics. She is a very nice person. She paid over $6 to send a package of fabric bits to someone she doesn’t know. She’s a good seamstress. All of her scraps came from washed and pressed fabrics. She’s a happy person. The color of her textiles are bright, colorful and cheery. I feel lucky to have been a little part of her generosity. Thank you my dear.

Amy also included this groovy pattern:

I immediately ran for the photo album. Yep, 1974 baby. Me and my sister Anna on a family vacation in Florida. My grandmother made me that top and I adored it. Mom, can you confirm that I tried to wear it everyday on that vacation? I’m so glad I have a picture of myself in it. I may just have to make this pattern up for old times sake. I know Caitlin won’t wear it but Leil might be convinced.

That is uncanny about the pattern & your photo! How wonderful that you have that! :) Love the poodle fabric, too.

It’ll be really groovy if there’s a similar photo of your two daughters, one of them wearing your creation!

Oh man, you have seriously just made my day — no matter that there are only 2 hours left of it. It has been a really hard day here and reading this post has left me quite choked up.

I love you that you are so thoughtful to “read” all that into a package of scraps. You are like a fabric anthropologist or something! I think you are right — our scraps really do tell about us, as our crafts do of course. You are very welcome — I’m thrilled to see my scraps in a good home and can’t wait for the unveiling of “the project.”

And the serendipty of that pattern! I’m pretty sure that when I mailed the package I didn’t even “know” your girls yet — I don’t think you’d posted about them. I picked it up at a thrift store during the Tie One On Smock challenge and only realized after I got it home that it was a youth pattern. I’m still learning about sewing clothes so wasn’t about to modify the pattern and it will be a long time to hold on to it before Bea can fit in that. So – off it went with the scraps. ACK! That you had something made from the pattern is unbelievable. I do hope you can convince one of your daughters to model a new version — if only for the photo album.

Seriously — thanks for that post. I can sleep a little, no a lot, happier.

I love how we can reach out and be friends to each other through the words we use in this ‘virtual’ world. I loved the post and reading Amy’s comment made me love it even more.

    Your new banner rocks, BTW.

What a thoughtful, sweet post! Amazing that that much can be seen in a pile of scraps. Yikes – I don’t think my scraps would be that complimentary!!! How sweet that you have that pattern and that you remember it! I do hope one of your girls will wear it and love it.

Did your hair get more curly over time? :o )

I can’t wait to see what you make with the fabric. I also got a box o’ scraps from Amy and immediately set out to make this coin purse: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pcampbell/177651206/in/set-72157594157569937/. Isn’t is funny how we can get so excited about other people’s scraps??

  8. [...] Amy’s scraps and I got a mention over on Quilter’s Buzz yesterday. Yoohoo! OK, those 15 seconds are over. [...]

  9. [...] Amy writes posts about things I’m thinking of. She makes quilts like I would make a quilt. She owns the same cookbooks. She worries about ‘too much’ just like I do. She owns the same fabrics I own. And the capper, this pattern, well, I’m just speechless when it comes to that whole thing. Coincidence… or not? [...]

I love your blog! I bookmarked it in my favorites. Amazing how like minds / kindred spirits find each other out of millions of people.
I am new to blogging, I hope that my blog turns out a fraction as entertaining as yours.
    Best Wishes
